The Central Bank of Jordan began in 1965 to study the necessary means of setting up a team for academic and practical training to cater for the requirements of the financial and banking staff and enhancing their academic and practical abilities. These efforts culminated in the creation of the Institute of Banking Studies in accordance with Article (37) Paragraph (d) of the Central Bank of Jordan Law and in accordance with the Institute's Articles of Association No. (69) issued on 1970. The Institute was officially inaugurated on October 9, 1971 and was housed then at the Central Bank's premises
In the early 1990's the Institute witnessed a new stage: the construction of the Institutes permanent headquarters in Tla'a Al Ali , a suburb of the capital. Amman . The complex was constructed on an eight dunums plot of land and comprised administration units, teaching and training courses halls, library, laboratories, cafeteria, health clinic and a multipurpose hall. Also , the Institute has two branches, one in Irbid and the other in Aqaba. The purpose of these branches is to widen the distribution of academic and training activities conducted by the Institute to cover the various regions of the Kingdom.
During the period (1993-2008) the Institutes management expanded the umbrella of the Institute training services to include, in addition to the Central Bank of Jordan and the licensed banks in Jordan and specialized credit institutions, numerous financial institutions, ministries, public corporations , private investment companies, Amman Financial Markets institutions, brokerage firms, the Social Security Corporation, in addition to insurance companies and foreign exchange companies and number of developmental organizations and non-governmental organizations working in microfinance and developing rural societies in Jordan .
In order to achieve its goals, the Institute of Banking Studies presents a group of academic programs and training activities.
The academic activities the Institute implement are the MBA Program in Banking and Finance in cooperation with the University of Jordan, which is distinctive on the local and the regional levels as well, and the Intermediate University Diploma program in Banking and Financial sciences (Ordinary and Islamic) in cooperation with Al-Balqa Applied University.
As for the training activities which witnessed a tremendous growth and varicosity during the last few years and included local training courses at the Institutes premises in Amman and at its branches in Irbid and Aqaba, training courses abroad and seminars in cooperation with regional and international institutions .
Beside the Specialized Professional Diploma Programs , Brokers Training and Certification Program, Spot Foreign Exchange and Money Markets Dealers Training and Certification Program, Comprehensive Training Program for Beginners, Sustainable Microfinance Training Program , Investment Advisor Training and Certification Program, Training and Qualifying Program for the CFA Level One Exam, and the English for Banking and Finance Program. Also the Institute has continued to hold the aptitude exams for the employees of the Jordanian banking and financial sector .
The total number of these training activities held since the Institutes establishment till the end of 2008 reached (3302) and was attended by (62782) participants .
